Mayor of Male’ City, Adam Azim, has issued a powerful call for party unity and loyalty during a major campaign rally held at Bondibai Park on Thursday evening. Addressing a gathering of supporters, the Mayor emphasized that leadership positions within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) should be for those who remained steadfast during the party's most challenging transitions.

The rally, held as part of Mayor Adam Azim’s campaign for the upcoming MDP Mayoral Primary, focused heavily on the political history of the capital and the importance of consistency. Without naming his opponent directly, Azim drew a sharp contrast between his record and those who exited the party to support the current administration.

“The Council and leadership of this party should not be handed to individuals who played a role in dismantling an MDP government,” Mayor Azim stated. “We must not allow the same people who criticized the leadership and joined hands with the opposition to now steer the future of our party.”

The Mayor’s comments refer to the political shift involving his primary challenger, Ali Azim. Despite previously serving as the MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Ali Azim moved to support the faction that helped bring President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to power a time when the President served as the Mayor of Male’.

Mayor Adam Azim, who was elected to the Mayorship following the MDP’s loss in the last general and parliamentary elections, positioned himself as the candidate of stability.

He reminded the party faithful that he stood by the MDP when many others left, working to rebuild the party’s presence in the capital.

As the primary election approaches on Friday, January 16, Mayor Azim urged all MDP members to head to the polls and support Candidate No. 1, promising to remain a dedicated voice for the party and the residents of Male’.
