Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) stated today that regardless of the outcome of the MDP primary being held to select candidates for the Local Council Elections, he wishes for everyone to remain united and move forward with the party.
The most intense competition in the MDP primary is the race to select a candidate for the Malé City Mayor. Competing for the ticket are the incumbent Mayor, Adam Azim, and the former Member of Parliament for Central Henveiru, Ali Azim.
Notably, Ali Azim was a key figure in the formation of a new party, The Democrats, after the MDP split following the 2023 presidential primary.
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in today's primary, Solih noted that he believes some of the individuals who previously left the party have returned because they wish to work together again. He emphasized that regardless of the result, they must move forward with the party.
"Therefore, whatever the outcome of the election, I do not know what the result will be; it will only be known once the votes are counted, a competitive campaign has taken place. So, when it concludes, whether a person loses or succeeds, my wish is for everyone to unite once again and move forward," Solih said.
Solih said that acting otherwise would lead to unfavorable consequences for MDP. He was referring to the defeat faced by MDP in the 2023 presidential election and urged party members and the leadership to work in a manner that prevents such an outcome from recurring.
