More than 1,000 forms submitted for council elections

The Elections Commission (EC) announced tonight that over 1,000 individuals have so far submitted their forms to contest in the Local Council Elections scheduled for April.

 

According to statistics released by the EC tonight, 1,010 individuals have applied for positions in island and city councils. Among these, 750 applicants submitted forms that met the eligibility criteria.

 

The EC further noted that out of the remaining 260 applicants, 77 individuals whose forms were initially rejected for not meeting the requirements have since reapplied.

 

Of the 750 eligible applications, 617 were submitted by political parties, while the remaining 133 were from independent candidates.

 

EC records also show that 734 forms were submitted for membership in Women's Development Committees (WDC). Out of these, a total of 574 forms were found to be eligible, consisting of 488 party-sponsored applications and 86 independent ones.

 

In this election, a total of 629 councilors will be elected across island and city councils. The EC opened the window for applications for both Local Councils and Women's Development Committees on the 17th of this month.

 


The deadline for submitting forms to contest in the elections is 3:00 PM next Sunday.
