President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed gratitude for India's ongoing assistance in the Maldives' economic and social development.

In individual letters dispatched on Monday to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Muizzu offered heartfelt congratulations for the celebration of India’s 77th Republic Day.

In his message to President Murmu, he characterized the 50-year relationship between the Maldives and India as one founded on reciprocal trust and esteem.

In his communication to Prime Minister Modi, President Muizzu emphasized the progress achieved in the bilateral relationship and commended India’s regional leadership during Modi’s administration. He reiterated the Maldives’ dedication to bolstering connections and improving collaborative efforts on issues of shared interest.

The President likewise expressed his warm regards for the well-being and success of the Indian leadership and citizens.

A post shared through the President’s official X-account reflected these views, highlighting India’s dedication to freedom, democracy, and effective governance, while expressing optimism for stronger bilateral ties ahead.

India commemorates Republic Day each year on January 26 to signify its shift to a republic.

President Muizzu’s government assumed control after the ‘India Out’ campaign, demanding the removal of Indian military forces from the Maldives. At that time, international media suggested that the relationship between the two countries could worsen. Soon after taking office, a number of deputy ministers expressed disdainful opinions about Prime Minister Modi and the Indian populace.

Nonetheless, the government has since made efforts to enhance relations.
