Ex-President Abdulla Yameen and ex-Home Minister Umar Naseer have expressed worries regarding the Elections Commission's stipulation that candidates running in the Local Council Elections must solely utilize the eFaas account to complete the endorsement form.
The Elections Commission began accepting applications for candidates participating in the Local Council Elections on January 17.
The application must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, February 1. Applications must be submitted through the commission's My Portal, requiring the applicant to log in with their eFaas account.
Independent candidates must provide endorsements from at least 50 people, which should also be submitted through the portal using the eFaas accounts of the endorsers.
Yameen informed a People's National Front (PNF) gathering last night that courts regard physical documents as legitimate proof, meaning the Elections Commission cannot completely ignore paper communications.
He declared that PNF has now brought this issue before the court against the commission, showing optimism about prevailing in the case.
Umar Naseer, in the meantime, penned a letter to Elections Commission President Mohamed Zahid, expressing worries that this policy violates the electoral rights of independent candidates.
Umar noted that merely a tiny portion of the population utilizes eFaas accounts, contending that mandating them infringes on the rights of individuals lacking these accounts.
The Local Council Elections, scheduled for April 4, will choose representatives in 225 districts.
