Sheikh Mohamed Shifan was chosen as the President of the Adhaalath Party yesterday.

According to a statement issued by the party yesterday evening, the outcome of the party's fourth term election for President resulted in Shifan securing 99 percent of the votes. Although the percentage was disclosed, the party did not reveal the total number of votes or how many individuals participated in the voting.

Shifan's partner Sheikh Abdulla Rasheed is the present Vice President of the party.

According to the Elections Commission's (EC) website, there are 8,267 members of the Adhaalath Party. Consequently, if all individuals on the register could vote, approximately 1,800 members took part in the voting process based on the party's data and the EC's site.

The election occurred yesterday between 9:00am and 8:00pm through the Fahi Vote online app.

Two individuals submitted their applications for the role of President of the Adhaalath Party: Dr. Ikram Abdul Sattar and Sheikh Mohamed Shifan. Dr. Ikram chose to abstain from the election after the choice was made to hold the voting online.

Nonetheless, the party indicated that its electoral rules prohibit the use of physical ballot boxes. Dr. Ikram asserted that although the Elections Commission directed the party to handle election matters transparently, the party displayed inflexibility and disregarded these directions.

Sheikh Mohamed Shifan, the newly elected President of the Adhaalath Party, earned his Shariah degree from the Islamic University of Madinah. Moreover, he earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the Maldives Business School.

He was chosen after the term of former party President and former Home Minister Imran Abdulla concluded.
