President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has left for the Federal Republic of Germany on an official visit, marking a new stage of strategic collaboration between the Maldives and one of Europe’s major economies as the two countries celebrate sixty years of diplomatic ties.
The trip, planned for 9 to 13 February 2026, occurs at the request of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It highlights the increasing political, economic, and environmental collaboration between the Maldives and Germany as global attention on climate resilience and sustainable development intensifies.
In the official schedule, President Muizzu is expected to engage in discussions with President Steinmeier and top officials of the German government. Conversations are anticipated to center on fortifying bilateral ties, enhancing economic collaboration, and promoting common goals regarding climate initiatives and ocean management.
A major focus of the visit will be a business forum between Maldives and Germany, uniting public and private sector officials from each nation. The forum seeks to create new investment prospects, enhance trade connections, and establish the Maldives as a reliable and progressive collaborator for German enterprises.
President Muizzu will also interact with prominent academic and policy organizations in Berlin. He is set to speak at Humboldt University about the Maldives’ approach to climate change adaptation, offering perspectives from the forefront of global climate vulnerability. During the German Council on Foreign Relations, the President will present the Maldives’ strategic viewpoint on how the ocean influences foreign policy, maritime security, and sustainable development.
The visit aligns with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Germany and the Maldives, which were established on 5 July 1966.
