State Electric Company Limited has started preparations to fulfill President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s significant Ramadan relief promise, revealing upcoming special meter readings next week to guarantee that household electricity bills remain under MVR 400 throughout the holy month.

The utility company stated that measurements will be taken on Monday and Tuesday in preparation for Ramadan, starting next Wednesday. The initial exercise will permit STELCO to generate distinct bills that specifically address the Ramadan timeframe, facilitating the smooth implementation of the government's promised discount system. Customers have been encouraged to collaborate to streamline the process.

The MVR 400 cap was introduced by President Muizzu three months ago at a PNC rally celebrating the administration’s second anniversary. Reiterating his dedication to alleviating household pressures, the President announced that any home electricity charge surpassing MVR 400 during Ramadan would be forgiven as a government-sponsored rebate.

“The highest fee for any domestic rate invoice during the forthcoming Ramadan will be MVR 400.” "The leftover amount will be offered as a discount," the President promised then, framing the initiative as immediate financial support for families celebrating the holy month.

The action extends from the Ramadan support initiatives of last year, during which the government implemented subsidies for electricity and water bills. Official statistics indicate that the total discounts provided during the last Ramadan reached around MVR 140 million, highlighting the government's willingness to invest in social protection.

By implementing advanced meter readings, STELCO is making certain that the President’s promise results in swift and quantifiable savings for families across the country. With the arrival of Ramadan, the government's subsidy initiative serves as a reaffirmation of its commitment to protect citizens from increasing living expenses while maintaining the essence of empathy and community that defines the sacred month.
