The Criminal Court has prolonged the detention of the Sri Lankan man taken into custody regarding the death of a 24-year-old Bangladeshi worker, whose remains were found in Thilafushi at the end of January.

Ameen Mia, an employee of WAMCO, disappeared from Thilafushi on January 26. His remains were discovered two days later, on January 28.

Police apprehended Madranga Dissanayake Menika Durayala, 32, from Sri Lanka, on charges of involuntary manslaughter. When he appeared before the Criminal Court on Wednesday, his detention was prolonged by another 45 days.

As per law enforcement, Ameen Mia passed away on the afternoon of January 26. Authorities think he collapsed after being hit by an excavator while removing debris at a landfill. The excavator kept transporting debris to a different site, and Ameen’s body was taken with the trash and concealed beneath it.

Authorities indicated that surveillance camera recordings from the location depict the excavator striking Ameen, after which operations resumed without pause.

The arrest warrant included a witness statement suggesting that Durayala possibly tried to escape. The officer conducting the investigation informed the court that the suspect had been employed unlawfully at the location.
