The Criminal Court has detained a 27-year-old individual from Hdh Nolhivaranfaru in custody while awaiting his trial, following allegations of assaulting a police officer with a sharp weapon.
The man is confronted with a charge of assault involving a sharp weapon. As per the court ruling released on Thursday, authorities claimed that he assaulted an officer with that weapon.
At the remand hearing, the suspect, having a previous criminal history, informed the court of his intention to hire legal representation.
In deciding to maintain his detention, the court referenced the due process requirements outlined in the Act on Prohibition of Gang Crimes and Other Offences. The court observed that the prosecution provided enough evidence to create reasonable suspicion, which included testimonies from responding officers and the injured officer, photographic proof of the injuries incurred, and information regarding the suspect’s criminal background.
Incidents involving attacks on law enforcement officers have been documented intermittently. In a related event in late December, three people with previous criminal backgrounds were apprehended in Malé for the attack on a police officer.
