Air India reached a significant milestone on Saturday by celebrating 50 years of continuous service to the Maldives, marking five decades of air links between the two bordering nations.

The airline initiated operations to Male' on 21 February 1976, becoming one of the pioneering international carriers connecting the Maldives with the area. Throughout the years, Air India has been instrumental in promoting tourism, enhancing bilateral relationships, and facilitating travel for countless Maldivians and Indians.

In celebration of the golden anniversary, Velana International Airport (VIA) arranged a special reception for flight AI 2239, which landed this afternoon with 139 passengers onboard. The airplane was honored with a ceremonial water salute as it rolled in, a traditional aviation practice designated for notable events.

Within the terminal, incoming travelers were greeted with roses, celebratory snacks, and cheerful faces from airport personnel, producing a lively ambiance that showcased the enduring bond between the two countries.

MACL stated that the achievement underscores Air India’s lasting impact on the Maldives’ aviation sector and the sustained robustness of air connections between the nations.

“Air India has been in our skies for fifty years, and the celebration today symbolizes the strong connections between people and tourism that have developed over time,” the company stated.
