A Bangladeshi citizen has been detained in Male’ on allegations of taking a fellow expatriate captive and assaulting him.

Iqbal Mia, 35, appeared at the Criminal Court on Friday for his detention hearing.

The remand warrant indicates that Iqbal is charged with taking another expatriate hostage and committing physical assault against him.

The court determined that the evidence was sufficient and ordered his detention by the police for 30 days.

Court records also indicate that Iqbal is an undocumented worker.
