After 31 years, Thalassemia Center begins Friday operations; blood donations will resume weekly following Ramadan

The Thalassemia Center will now operate every Friday, representing the first instance in its 31‑year existence that the facility offers services on that day.


In a post on X, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the center started operations on Friday, 20 February 2026, highlighting that the center had never provided services on a Friday since its opening on 29 December 1994. The President stated that just on the first Friday, there were 14 transfusions conducted and five individuals donated blood.


The President mentioned that blood donation services will similarly be offered every Friday at specific times following Ramadan. He mentioned that the alteration will facilitate travel for individuals from the atolls to Male' on weekends, allowing access to donation and transfusion services without needing to take time off during weekdays.



The Thalassemia Center moved to Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumale' Phase I on 8 May 2024, and it is still in operation there.
