The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has reiterated that they are looking for a contractor to refurbish sections of the cat shelter, Olhu Hiyaa.
Last month, the ministry announced they are looking for a contractor to perform repairs and renovations on the facility's Isolation Unit, General Holding Area, restrooms, office, and guardroom.
The ministry's announcement today indicates that the cost estimates provided in reaction to the earlier announcement were higher than the budget set for the project. Therefore, the ministry is now accepting new submissions again.
The due date for submitting cost estimates is March 5.
The Male' City Council was originally intended to run the facility, having also financed its development.
The cabinet later opted to transfer the management of the shelter to the Animal Welfare Ministry.
The council stated that Olhu Hiyaa, constructed for MVR 30 million, can accommodate 3000 cats. Currently, the facility looks after 258 cats.
