Maldives announces candidature for UN Human Rights Council 2028–2030 term

The Maldives has officially declared its candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2028–2030 period, reiterating its dedication to positively supporting the Council’s mission.


The declaration was issued by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, as he presented the Maldives’ national statement during the General Debate of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.


In his speech, the Minister reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering dedication to the principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, highlighting their ongoing importance in tackling current global issues.


He emphasized the significance of enhanced multilateral collaboration and principled involvement to maintain the credibility and neutrality of the global human rights framework.


Dr. Khaleel emphasized the Maldives’ continual initiatives to bolster democratic governance, reinforce the rule of law, and improve institutional accountability.


He also highlighted advancements in anti-corruption efforts and actions designed to assist vulnerable and marginalized populations, such as women entrepreneurs, individuals with disabilities, and children.



The Minister also emphasized the Maldives' ongoing involvement with international human rights frameworks, including the finalization of its fourth Universal Periodic Review, and reaffirmed the nation’s support for increased involvement of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the Council's activities.
