The Maldives has urged for strong and effective actions to support the Palestinian people, highlighting that simple statements and discussions are no longer adequate.
The Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel made this appeal during an extraordinary gathering of the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
In the meeting, Minister Khaleel emphasized the wrongs endured by the Palestinian people during the sacred month of Ramadan, pointing to the continuous occupation and dispossession.
He expressed Maldives' utmost condemnation of Israel’s recent announcement of lands in the West Bank categorized as "state property." The Minister emphasized that these actions are a blatant breach of international law, jeopardizing peace opportunities and denying the Palestinian people their basic rights.
“Palestinian territories are the rightful property of the Palestinian people,” he emphasized.
Minister Khaleel reiterated that the sole lasting resolution to the Palestinian situation is the creation of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, founded on the borders prior to 1967, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital.
The Minister also emphasized the initiatives presently being pursued by Maldives in aid of the Palestinian people:
"We must reflect together, examine ourselves – considering what actions we, as a united Ummah, can take." "Not merely words, but tangible actions," he noted.
He emphasized once more that the Maldives is dedicated to promoting dialogue and a peaceful, enduring resolution.
