The young person who operated the motorcycle implicated in a deadly crash that led to the demise of a 16-year-old has received conditional release from detention.

The crash occurred around 1:30am early Wednesday near the traffic lights on Boduthakurufaanu Magu when the motorbike, traveling at a high speed, lost control and swerved onto the sidewalk.

A 19-year-old Maldivian man rode the motorcycle, carrying a 16-year-old boy as the passenger. They were both quickly taken to the hospital for treatment; however, the 16-year-old later died from his injuries.

The 19-year-old from R. Inguraidhoo was later apprehended since he lacked a valid license to operate a vehicle of that type.

Criminal Court documents indicate that the court approved conditional release for the youth during a remand hearing held on Thursday.

During the remand hearing, the young person insisted that the accident was accidental and asked to be freed from detention, even with stringent conditions.

The Police stated they had no issues with the request as long as the youth assisted with the investigation.

Although the judge approved conditional release, it was emphasized that the Police have the authority to re-detain him if any conditions are violated.

Nevertheless, the documents did not reveal the requirements established.

Excessive speed remains a primary factor in accidents across the Maldives, many of which have led to deaths, especially among the youth.
