A serious maritime incident involving an Iranian naval vessel near Sri Lanka has sparked security concerns across the Indian Ocean region, including the Maldives, as search and rescue efforts continue for dozens of missing sailors.

Regional authorities reported that the Iranian warship IRIS Dena issued a distress signal after allegedly coming under attack in waters south of Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The vessel, which was carrying around 180 personnel, reportedly sustained heavy damage during the incident.

Early reports suggest that more than 100 crew members are feared missing, while several sailors were rescued after the ship began sinking following the suspected strike. Sri Lankan naval forces quickly initiated emergency rescue operations after receiving the distress call.

Sri Lanka begins rescue efforts

The Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force deployed ships and aircraft to the area to search for survivors. Officials say roughly 30 sailors have been rescued so far and taken to medical facilities in southern Sri Lanka.

Search operations are still underway as authorities continue efforts to locate more survivors in nearby waters.

Key waters near Maldives

The incident took place along a crucial maritime route in the Indian Ocean linking the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Naval vessels and commercial ships regularly pass through this corridor, which also runs close to the Maldives’ maritime boundaries.

Security experts note that the Maldives is located near some of the busiest sea lanes in the world, making regional maritime stability vital for the country’s trade, aviation routes and tourism-based economy.

Any escalation of military activity in nearby waters could potentially affect shipping lanes and regional air traffic across the Indian Ocean.

Growing regional tensions

The reported attack comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran and Western allies across the Middle East and surrounding regions. While the exact details of the strike remain unclear, analysts say the incident underscores increasing instability in key maritime corridors.

Sri Lankan authorities are continuing rescue operations while monitoring developments in the surrounding waters.

Regional governments and maritime agencies are expected to keep a close watch on the situation as investigations into the incident continue.
