The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday for reportedly intentionally colliding with a motorcycle using a pickup.
He has been detained for five days after appearing in court for a remand hearing on Wednesday following his arrest. Consequently, his detention is scheduled to end on March 10th.
The Police have charged him with reckless driving that led to a traffic accident. As per the remand directive, the person abruptly veered his pickup into the motorcycle lane and purposefully hit a motorcycle. The order, referencing the investigating officer, indicated that the motorcyclist was injured in the collision.
Reckless driving is heavily banned by Maldivian law and leads to severe consequences. Article 62 of the Land Transport Act mandates that anyone driving land vehicles must prioritize road safety and operate their vehicles in a manner that does not put others at risk.
Operating a vehicle in a way that endangers lives or property is deemed a criminal act. Officials have the authority to suspend or cancel the licenses of hazardous drivers, seize vehicles for a designated time, and levy fines as stipulated by law.
Since Ramadan began, multiple other traffic-related events have been reported. In one instance, a pickup truck driver was fined for obstructing an emergency ambulance during the unloading of cargo. Authorities verified that suitable measures were implemented in that situation as well.
