President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged for increased collaboration among Commonwealth nations to improve climate resilience, obtain concessional financing, and tackle debt vulnerabilities sustainably.
In his address for Commonwealth Day, the President noted that the Commonwealth remains a strong symbol of camaraderie and unity in fostering peace, effective governance, sustainable growth, and global collaboration.
Citing this year's theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” he emphasized the significance of joint efforts to tackle worldwide issues. He stated that the theme embodies the Commonwealth’s essence of togetherness and collective accountability.
President Muizzu emphasized that the theme closely corresponds with the Maldives' national priorities, which include enhancing climate adaptation abilities, increasing involvement of students and teachers in education, promoting sustainable tourism, advancing digitalization, and ensuring development benefits are accessible to all communities.
He emphasized that the Maldives, being a small island developing nation, is extremely susceptible to climate effects and external economic disruptions, stressing the importance of enhanced collaboration within the Commonwealth.
Commemorating the 77th anniversary of the organization, the President reiterated the Maldives' dedication to enhancing relationships and collaborating with member nations to guarantee prosperity and growth for all countries, irrespective of their size.
He remarked that this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) offers a significant chance to strengthen partnerships and achieve substantial results for the Commonwealth community, highlighting that the Maldives will engage actively in these initiatives.
