Authorities have been charged with torturing a Bangladeshi individual detained during a counter-narcotics operation that resulted in the confiscation of three kilos of drugs.

Haneef, aged 36, along with his Maldivian boss, Azhad Naseem, 28, were apprehended by law enforcement on February 20.

Haneef has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), alleging that the police tortured him.

He is still in police detention.

Haneef, initially held for five days, was brought to the Criminal Court on Sunday for a remand extension.

The court prolonged his detention by 30 days.

The remand order indicates that Haneef informed the court he was tortured by the police and has reported this to the HRCM.

Both the police and the HRCM have not provided comments on the accusation.

Authorities had indicated that detectives examined two cars and confiscated three kilograms of narcotics during the operation on February 20, which resulted in the detention of Haneef and his boss.
