On Tuesday evening, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) declared its backing for conducting the parliamentary and presidential elections simultaneously, labeling this decision as the most prudent option given the nation’s present economic situation.

The proposal has been approved by Parliament, and the referendum is set for 4 April, coinciding with the local council elections.

In its announcement, the MDA mentioned that merging the two national elections would provide “considerable advantages to the state and the Maldivian populace, given the economic circumstances and the necessity to uphold national stability.”

The party emphasized that MDA President Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has consistently advocated for policies that enhance living conditions and bolster the economy. Siyam, in his roles as a parliamentarian and a prominent businessman, has consistently emphasized economic stability, fiscal responsibility, and social cohesion, according to the statement.

“The party recognizes the government's stance that consolidating the elections will relieve pressure on public finances and aid in debt management,” the MDA stated.

The organization characterized the choice as a favorable move for national growth and encouraged all governmental entities to collaborate in cutting costs and strengthening economic resilience.

“The party will consistently prioritize the greatest interests of the citizens,” the statement noted, reaffirming the MDA’s dedication to bolstering initiatives that ensure the nation's future and financial stability.

Although Parliament has sanctioned the scheduling of the two elections simultaneously, the Constitution mandates public consultation prior to enacting such a change. Consequently, the government has chosen to conduct the referendum in conjunction with the council elections.
