The Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denounced the recent drone strike on the consulate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Kurdistan area of Iraq.

On February 28, the United States and Israel conducted unexpected strikes against Iran, igniting a regional conflict as Iran responded by deploying hundreds of drones and missiles targeting not only Israel but also nearby Gulf Arab nations housing US assets.

This involves a drone strike on Erbil on Monday. The Counter-Terrorism service of Iraqi Kurdistan reported that it shot down three drones in Erbil, with wreckage from one of the drones landing close to the UAE consulate.

On Wednesday, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry released a statement that firmly condemned the attack, emphasizing that the targeting of diplomatic sites represents “a significant breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and undermines the accepted standards of diplomatic interaction.”

“The Maldives Government emphasizes the significance of safeguarding diplomatic missions and conveys its complete support for the Government and the friendly people of the United Arab Emirates,” stated the Foreign Ministry.

The Maldives has criticized assaults by the US and Israel alongside Iran, and has consistently called on all parties to halt hostilities as the conflict escalates.
