Last week, two Indian citizens detained at Velana International Airport for trying to smuggle drugs into the Maldives stated in court that they were not aware of the narcotics in their bags.
The individuals have been recognized as Jainab Wajih Ali, 25, and Mohamed Navaz Dhayathar, 21.
As per the Police, the two Indian citizens, believed to have tried to smuggle more than one kilo of drugs into the Maldives, were transferred to the authorities by the Maldives Customs Service. They were later placed in custody for five days.
After the five-day remand period ended, the court has now prolonged their remand until April 9th.
The remand order states that both individuals asserted during the investigation that they were unaware of any drugs being stored in their luggage. The Police has, however, confirmed earlier the confiscation of three bottles that held a combined weight of 1.83 kilograms of hashish oil from their bags.
The 1.83 kilograms of drugs confiscated satisfy the legal limit for drug trafficking. If found guilty, both suspects could receive life sentences.
This case pertains to a recent verdict where a Bangladeshi citizen was sentenced to life in prison earlier this week for a comparable drug trafficking offense.
