Five expatriate workers have perished and three more suffered serious burn injuries after a blaze erupted late last night at a foreign worker housing block in Dhigurah.
The Maldives Police Service stated that the incident was reported at approximately 2:00 a.m., leading to an emergency response on the island. Officials verified that multiple people were present in the structure when the blaze started.
Authorities reported that two victims with severe burn injuries have been taken to Malé for advanced medical care. A group of investigators from the capital, comprising a medical doctor, is anticipated to head to Dhigurah to help local officials ascertain the details of the incident.
Initial reports indicate that the fire might have been caused by a gas leak, though authorities have not confirmed the precise reason. Inquiries are still in progress.
Island residents stated that the blaze started when two people were preparing food late at night within the lodging building. When the fire started, it was thought that multiple other residents were asleep in the structure.
