Malaysian woman in custody for drug arrest says she acted as a courier

A Malaysian woman detained for trying to bring over two kilograms of drugs into Maldives informed the court that a friend provided her with the package and that she traveled to Maldives at this friend's cost.


Ranjini Jeevananthan, a 38-year-old woman, was apprehended at Velana International Airport on February 28. Two men from the Maldives were arrested as part of the investigation.


The individuals suspected are:


- Ahmed Rishmah, 21, Sunlight Residence, GA. Dhaandhoo


- Ibrahim Looth, 29, GDh. Furusathu. Vaadhoo


- Ranjini Jeevananthan, 38, Malaisie


During the remand hearing on Sunday, Ranjini informed the court that the package she was carrying was given to her by a friend and was intended for a man in Male'. The court documents also indicated that she visited the Maldives for just three days.



Ranjini was first remanded for 15 days and on Sunday was remanded for another 20 days. The two Maldivian suspects were apprehended individually after her arrest.
