MP Abdulla Jabir stated that the government must persist in generating jobs and broadening initiatives without tying employment prospects to elections or seasonal factors.

During his appearance on SSTV's Baaru Hathareh programme, Jabir stated that if a lagoon is accessible for development, it ought to be dredged, with the assured jobs provided. He claimed that there should be an expansion of government projects and that more individuals should be provided with employment.

“I think this government must provide employment to all, whether it’s election time, a rainy day, or a sunny day,” Jabir stated.

He stated that gang violence and criminal activity have decreased since state-owned enterprises started providing more employment opportunities. He also observed that earlier administrations had employed many individuals “under the pretext of having nothing to do.”

Jabir emphasized that a greater number of Maldivians should be hired in all sectors, stating this would be advantageous for the nation.

His remarks follow the announcement of a significant recruitment initiative by the state-owned Road Development Corporation (RDC), which has been confronted with corruption accusations, on the 14th of this month. The organization has started accepting applications for 150 roles across six islands.

RDC's announcements indicate that Uligan and Rasdhoo have the most vacancies, with 50 positions available on each island. Furthermore, there are 24 positions available in Kashidhoo, 13 in Madifushi, 12 in Naifaru, and one job in Hinnavaru.

It has become routine for governments to increase employment in large state-owned enterprises during election times. Earlier independent reports have observed that employing government resources in this way can promote corruption.

Firms often linked to these hiring trends are loss-making Fenaka, along with MACL, STELCO, and RDC.
