Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that efforts are being made to revise the necessary regulations to allow spearfishing in Maldivian waters.

During a press conference today, Minister Thoriq stated that significant plans have been made to enhance the diversification of the tourism industry. He mentioned that despite the 40-year ban on spearfishing in the Maldives, there will be attempts to allow it.

"Spearfishing will also be allowed starting in April, accompanied by a regulation." That is an entirely fresh segment. "For the last 40 years, spearfishing has been banned," he stated.

While spearfishing is not allowed, using hand-held iron rods to catch fish is not forbidden in the Maldives, and this method is widely practiced.

Alongside spearfishing, the Minister mentioned that efforts are underway to prepare the essential regulations for initiating technical recreational diving.

"We aim to launch technical recreational diving in the coming month of April." At present, diving is permitted to a depth of 30 meters; however, when technical recreational diving is permitted up to 40 meters, the influx of tourists participating in it will rise, he stated.
