Early findings from the Local Council Election indicate that the government did not obtain any mayoral positions, while the MDP achieves triumph in five Maldivian cities, with current mayors from the primary opposition party being reelected.
On Saturday, Maldivians participated in local council elections, voted for the women’s development committee (WDC), and took part in a referendum regarding the unification of presidential and parliamentary elections.
Voting commenced at 8:00am, and polling locations ceased allowing voters into the line at 17:00pm. The counting of votes is currently underway.
In the mayoral election in Male’ City, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Kulhudhuffushi City, and Thinadhoo City, there are 14 candidates competing.
Initial results obtained by Sun indicate that the current mayors of the five cities representing the main opposition MDP are ahead in the polls.
