MDP Vice-Chairman Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) was suddenly ousted from his position on Tuesday, exacerbating the party's internal conflicts.

The dismissal letter indicates that the decision was made in accordance with Article 70 of the MDP constitution, which specifies that the party chairperson has the authority to appoint and dismiss a deputy chairperson with the approval of the National Assembly.

Nonetheless, Iburey vehemently contested the legitimacy of the action.

He stated that the chairperson lacks the power to terminate him in this way.

"This dismissal is prohibited by the party constitution." "I won't accept being dismissed like this by the chairperson," he stated, directly contesting the decision.

Iburey’s departure occurs during a period of increased tension within the party. The conflict escalated when former President Mohamed Nasheed was denied the opportunity to address the rally on Monday. Supporters of Nasheed, including Iburey, chose to boycott the event.

The seat assigned for former President Mohamed Nasheed stays vacant at the Heyvalla Thayyaru MDP rally organized to commemorate the party's successes in the recent local council elections, April 6, 2026.

A vacant chair situated between former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and interim chairman Abdul Ghafoor Moosa was subsequently taken away shortly after the rally commenced.

Certain MDP members contend that the party's robust showing in Saturday’s council elections was fueled by initiatives to reintegrate Nasheed and his backers.

The internal divide expanded even more on Tuesday when Ahmed Mauroof, the party’s legal director, was terminated as well. Mauroof informed Sun that he has requested an explanation from the party regarding his dismissal. He recognized internal conflicts but stated that he did not feel these disagreements warranted the dismissal of a technical officer.
