The People’s National Front (PNF) commenced a series of protests in Male' City on Tuesday evening demanding the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The initial rally took place in the Raalhugandu region, where attendees asserted that President Muizzu has lost the people's mandate after the local council and women's development committee elections held last Saturday.

In conjunction with those elections, a referendum was held on the possibility of conducting the two primary national elections simultaneously. The opposition MDP secured the most seats in the elections, and preliminary results indicate that 68 percent of voters opposed the government-supported plan to merge the elections.

In response to inquiries regarding the movement, PNF Secretary General Maleeh Jamal stated that the demonstrations were started by regular party members who called for further action. He stated that the aim of the movement is to make the public aware that the election outcomes reflect insufficient backing for the present administration. Maleeh states that approximately 30 percent of voters back the government.

He mentioned that the PNF's demonstrations will persist, although he did not indicate the specific evenings for the events.

The PNF began its activities as President Muizzu left for Umrah on Monday accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.

After Saturday’s elections, various high-ranking opposition MDP officials have similarly demanded the president’s resignation.
