Former President Mohamed Nasheed has advocated for the establishment of a multi-party interim government, pointing to what he refers to as a decline in public trust in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and his administration.

The call occurred after the President’s Office confirmed that 10 out of the 20 cabinet members had stepped down.

Nasheed expressed his concerns in a post on X, stating that the recent surge in cabinet resignations, coupled with continuous dismissals and exits from multiple state-owned enterprises and the President’s Office, indicated increasing instability within the upper echelons of government.

"The Cabinet has lost the President’s confidence, and the President has lost the public’s confidence," Nasheed stated.

"The previous president, now part of the five-member interim committee managing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), stated that the current circumstances require the establishment of an interim government that includes all political factions."

"I urge the establishment of a temporary government comprising all parties to carry out necessary structural reforms and to oversee the organization and execution of a fair and free election." He mentioned.

"He also mentioned that the Maldivian economy is starting to experience significant impacts from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, heightening public worry and financial instability."

"At this pivotal moment, the negative consequences of the conflict have started to significantly affect the country's economy." Nasheed mentioned.

Nasheed's statements arise during increased political tension and conjecture regarding the government's stability after numerous high-profile resignations.
