A teacher in India was attacked by a student at GDh. According to Indian media reports, Atoll School has departed the Maldives for additional treatment.

Authorities reported that at 11:46am on Sunday, they were alerted about an Indian female teacher who had been attacked by a student at the school. Initially, she received treatment at the health centre on the island and was subsequently moved to Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo.

The teacher has been identified by Indian newspaper Mathrubhumi as Smita Pillai, 35, and it was reported that her nose was broken during the attack. Her spouse, Deepak, informed the newspaper that a student in eighth grade attacked her in the computer lab.

The report states that Smita informed the student she would document the behavior and inform the principal if he continued playing a computer game. The student reportedly tossed her phone, hit her in the face, and continuously tugged at her hair. The newspaper reported that Smita fainted during the attack.

Deepak informed Mathrubhumi that he had notified the police and the Education Ministry about the incident. He mentioned that neither the school nor the ministry had replied, and that he planned to bring up the issue with the Indian High Commission before going back to India with Smita.

According to the report from Indian media, the student has been suspended and will participate in one week of counselling.
