President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has designated Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) as the Chief Spokesperson for the Government.
The meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, and Shareef got his appointment letter during a ceremony at the President’s Office. He swore his oath of office in front of Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim and signed the oath declaration after the ceremony.
The appointment was issued at the ministerial level, granting the role the rank and status of a Cabinet-level position within the President’s Office.
Shareef was formerly the Maldives’ Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. He was removed from the position earlier this month due to adjustments in diplomatic assignments.
Mohamed Hussain Shareef has occupied various high-ranking government roles throughout the years. He has formerly been a Cabinet minister and a member of Parliament, and has represented the Maldives internationally in various ambassadorial roles. In the initial phase of his career, he served at the President’s Office as Chief Government Spokesperson from 2005 to 2007, and subsequently as Presidential Spokesperson from 2007 to 2008. During that time, he also led the Strategic Communications Unit at the President’s Office. Most recently, he held the position of Ambassador from the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates.
Shareef is the son of Asma Rasheed, the MP for Maafannu Central.
