The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has initiated nominations for awards that acknowledge individuals and groups striving to decrease tobacco consumption.

May 31 is designated as World No Tobacco Day annually by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The occasion is also commemorated in the Maldives.

The HPA announced on Monday that this year's theme is "World No Tobacco Day 2026: Unmasking the Appeal."

The agency announced it will offer a World No Tobacco Day Award as a component of this year’s events.

The awards are designed to recognize the contributions of individuals and organizations engaged in tobacco control and to promote ongoing efforts to decrease tobacco consumption.

The awards welcome individuals, organizations, and agencies that have aided in tobacco control and safeguarding society from the dangers of tobacco, especially in alignment with this year’s theme.

Applications may be sent via email using the application form prior to the office closing on the second day of the following month.

The release contained the application form, a breakdown of award categories, and the assessment criteria. The awards consist of acknowledgement for exceptional efforts in tobacco control, a nonprofit organization award, and a youth award.

It is important to highlight that the existing administration has implemented various actions to decrease tobacco consumption. This comprises raising taxes on cigarettes, outlawing vaping, and forbidding tobacco sales to minors born after a designated year.
