The Maldives Human Rights Commission (HRCM) has voiced worries that political parties are inciting disturbances during nighttime protests in Male' City.
The PNF and MDP, two opposition parties, are presently conducting a series of rallies in the capital. Multiple arrests occurred during an MDP rally on Saturday night.
In a statement, the HRCM noted that certain political parties, during their evening rallies, are expressing views that contradict general social norms and are being disseminated in the media in ways that incite hatred among the populace.
The Commission stated that the right to think freely and express one’s opinions through speech, writing, and other forms, as long as it aligns with Islamic principles, is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution.
It remarked that while freedom of expression is extensive, it should be practiced within boundaries and without violating the rights of others.
The HRCM called on political parties to refrain from inciting hatred or disturbing social harmony through their rallies, media remarks, or social media actions. It stated that statements promoting violence are against the essence of the constitutional right to free speech.
The Commission expressed significant concern regarding remarks that promote such behaviors.
The HRCM denounced these actions and urged political parties along with their leaders to avoid them. It also called on pertinent state institutions to implement robust measures within the legal framework.
Simultaneously, the Commission urged the community to refrain from voicing opinions or feelings in manners that could heighten tensions during political events. It encouraged all political parties to place the public's interest first and avert similar occurrences.
