A person in police custody was discovered dead on Friday in his cell at the Male’ Custodial.
A police representative stated on Saturday that the suspect, a 45-year-old man from the Maldives, was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Friday afternoon and was transported to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
According to hospital officials, the police stated that the man had already died when he arrived at the hospital.
The spokesperson stated that the 45-year-old was arrested to carry out a warrant for his appearance in court while in police custody.
The spokesperson mentioned that the information regarding the death has been communicated to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The police are currently investigating the case.
The most recent custodial death occurred following the passing of a 41-year-old on April 15 at the Male’ Custodial.
Authorities stated they will perform an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
