Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the MP for the South Galolhu constituency and an aspirant for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson role, has officially demanded action against the party's Deputy Chairperson, Ibrahim Waheed (Ibrey), due to alleged participation in a competing campaign.

The appeal was sent in a letter directed to MDP Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

In his correspondence, Meekail mentioned that he had gotten several complaints concerning Waheed’s direct involvement in campaign activities backing former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is also running for the chairperson position.

He noted that these claims are backed by photos and videos that are being shared in both traditional and social media.

Meekail emphasized that the Deputy Chairperson is responsible for managing membership issues and the execution of party elections, and must thus maintain neutrality while adhering to the highest standards of integrity.

He contended that Waheed’s apparent backing of a particular candidate results in an unbalanced environment and weakens the credibility, fairness, and transparency of the election process.

In his letter, Meekail expressed that when a senior party official openly supports a candidate, it infringes upon the rights of other candidates and party members, labeling it a grave injustice.

He also emphasized that his choice to run for the chairperson position stems from a dedication to restoring trust within party members and avoiding similar issues in the future.

In his request, Meekail urged Ibrahim Waheed to suspend his official responsibilities for the entire campaign period.

The letter ended with a request for the Interim Chairperson to look into the issue and take suitable steps in line with the party’s regulations and protocols.
