Adhadhu editor Hassan questioned by the Police

Hassan Mohamed, Editor ar the online news outlet "Adhadhu," appeared before the Maldives Police Service on Wednesday morning to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation concerning a documentary titled "Aisha," produced by the media.
Accompanied by his legal counsel, Hassan arrived at police headquarters at 08:30am on Wednesday morning.


According to the summons issued by the police, Hassan is under investigation for his alleged involvement in the publication of a video report titled "Aisha" on Adhadhu on March 28, 2026. The Police alleges that the documentary contains defamatory material directed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.


Meanwhile, Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa has been summoned to appear before the Police at 14:30pm in connection with the same investigation.


Based on an intelligence report, the Criminal Court has already ordered the seizure of passports belonging to both Fiyaz and Hassan, thereby imposing a travel ban on them. Furthermore, it is reported that a former employee of the President's Office, whose passport has also been withheld in connnection to this case, has been served with a police summons.


The criminal investigation into this matter commenced approximately one month after the release of the "Aisha" documentary.


The investigation gained significant momentum following a press conference held at the President's Office on Monday where President Muizzu was questioned regarding the allegations raised in the documentary. The President categorically denied the accusations, describing them as baseless, and announced his intention to pursue legal action. The documentary in question presents several serious allegations against the President.


As part of the investigative process, police executed a court-authorised search of the Adhadhu newsroom on Monday night, during which multiple electronic devices were seized. As authorities continue their criminal probe, the case has drawn widespread public attention and sparked discussions regarding the state of press freedom in the Maldives.
