On Monday, after substantial rainfall inundated the streets of Male’ City, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) sent in troops.
The present stretch of inclement weather has been linked to the monsoon transitional phase, as the Northeast or Iruvai Monsoon shifts into the Southwest or Hulhangu Monsoon.
The capital Male’ faced intense rain and thunderstorms on Monday, leading to flooding.
The MNDF reports that personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services have been sent to remove water from inundated roads.
Troops are employing pumps to remove water from the streets in the most affected regions, including the vicinity of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the Maafannu Ferry Terminal, the Salman Mosque, and the Swimming Track.
The flooding occurs alongside a yellow alert for moderate thunderstorms issued for the region from Lh. Atoll to V. Atoll until at least 1:00 p.m.
The Maldives Meteorological Service predicts broad rain coverage with sporadic heavy showers and thunderstorms, featuring gusts up to 40 miles per hour, to continue for the next 24 hours, especially affecting the central and southern areas.
Seas are anticipated to be moderate, turning rough during rainfall.
