Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem announces that a dedicated blood donor registry will be launched this year, emphasizing that the government is focused on achieving its goal of providing a joyful and satisfying life for Thalassemia patients.
In a statement on Friday marking World Thalassemia Day, Haleem noted that the event allows for reflection on advancements in enhancing Thalassemia care and blood services in the Maldives, while also reaffirming the commitment to further progress in the field.
Haleem, in his remarks, highlighted multiple significant contributions of the current administration to the Thalassemia sector.
In this context, he noted the move of the Thalassemia Center to Orange Hiyaa on May 25 of the previous year as a notable enhancement in the quality and accessibility of services for Thalassemia patients. Furthermore, he pointed out that the creation of the Thalassemia Patient Care Center established a vital framework for overseeing patient health and guaranteeing a more organized system of care.
Among other advancements mentioned in the statement were:
- The implementation of a specific financial grant for Thalassemia patients.
- The creation of a management system for Thalassemia patient registry
- The initiation of DNA lab services and the establishment of blood transfusion services on Fridays.
- The implementation of MRI T2 Star services for assessing iron levels in patients' bodies.
- The launch of Endocrinology, Haematology, and HLA Typing services
Haleem, mentioning the birth of four kids with Thalassemia this year, highlighted the issue seriously. He emphasized that enhancing counselling services to increase awareness and encourage early preventive actions is still a primary focus of MCGH.

He stated that a complete system providing pre-marital advice, along with essential information and guidance on preventing and managing Thalassemia, will be launched this year. Moreover, Haleem2 declared that a digital registry for blood donors will be introduced this year.
Haleem expressed sincere gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for what he called significant improvements in the country's Thalassemia care system.
He emphasized that the main goal of the government is to ensure a dignified and fulfilling life for children with Thalassemia, citing the suggested creation of a specialized Thalassemia hospital and enhanced access to bone marrow transplants funded by Zakat as tangible evidence of this commitment.
