President Dr Mohamed Muizzu states his intention to revise the Army Retirement Regulations to ensure that military pension benefits are determined by the total years of service.
During the official ceremony celebrating the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force, the President remarked that the existing system is unjust since retirees receive identical benefits regardless of serving 30 years or 35 years.
“I plan to modify the Army Retirement Regulations to assess benefits based on years of service,” he stated.
The President also revealed intentions to move regional commands to islands where military families reside, enabling service members to stay long-term without being apart from their families.
"That will allow us to serve the nation while remaining near our families," he stated.
Muizzu stated that the government has set aside funds to enhance youth enlistment in the army, asserting that a bigger force will yield better outcomes.
He also mentioned that dedicated soldiers ought to have the opportunity to serve longer, pointing out that the existing system compels personnel to depart after holding the same rank for a specific duration, a practice he called unjust and unfair.
The President stated that the government will implement further reforms to tackle these problems.
