The annual blood donation campaign by Sun Siyam Resorts began on Saturday at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, signaling the launch of this year’s corporate humanitarian initiative.
May 8 is significant for the Group as it marks the anniversary of Sun Siyam Resorts and World Thalassaemia Day. To commemorate the day, the company has been organizing blood donation events annually since 2015.
The resort’s management launched this year’s campaign, which is part of the Group’s 36th anniversary celebrations. Along with Olhuveli staff, many visiting tourists participated in the donation drive.
Hassan Adil, Assistant Group General Manager, stated that the yearly campaign is among the company's key CSR initiatives, aimed at aiding thalassaemia patients nationwide.
He remarked that Sun Siyam Resorts Chairman and Managing Director, Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, well-known for his charitable efforts, emphasizes “the significance of contributing to society” and actively supports projects that aid children and at-risk communities. In the previous year, a total of 465 individuals donated blood at all Sun Siyam locations.
Adil stated that involvement has grown annually. "Sun Siyam Group stands out as the largest blood-donor organization among other companies, and I take great pride in that." "I'm really glad that our staff contributes consistently," he remarked.
Hawwa Hana, Assistant Human Resource Manager at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, provided updated statistics on thalassaemia. She mentioned that 974 patients were documented in the Maldives as of last year, with 665 still undergoing treatment. Among these, 328 are provided services in Male' while 337 are in the atolls. Hana expressed her gratitude to Maldivian Blood Services for their ongoing assistance to patients.
Fathimath Asila, Secretary General of the Maldivian Thalassaemia Society, stated that the annual blood drives by Sun Siyam Resorts are vital for maintaining a consistent blood supply for children with thalassaemia. Certain children need transfusions on a monthly basis, while others require them every 10 to 15 days, she mentioned.
Referencing 2024 statistics, Asila mentioned that one in six individuals in the Maldives is a carrier of thalassaemia, with 16–18 percent of the population having inherited beta thalassaemia. In the Maldives, one out of every 120 children born has the condition, and over five children die from it annually.
Comparable donation events are planned at additional Sun Siyam resorts in the upcoming days.
Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the founder of Sun Siyam Resorts, has been recognized for his dedication to humanitarian efforts.
