Ex-President Mohamed Nasheed provided a strong reaction on Sunday after the Foreign Ministry released a statement in reply to his remarks made to reporters during his visit to India for the 10th edition of the Indian Ocean Dialogue (IOD).

Upon his return to Male’ on Saturday, Nasheed informed reporters that Mauritius was open to discussions aimed at restoring the relationship it cut with the Maldives in February due to its position on Chagos.

In several media interviews during the conference, he voiced concerns that President Muizzu’s administration was squandering foreign aid.

The Foreign Ministry released a statement on Saturday evening, cautioning that “public remarks, particularly from individuals who have held high government positions, concerning foreign policy, regional security, and international relations, have considerable consequences.”

In a Sunday post on X, Nasheed stated that the primary duty of an opposition party is to review and critique the government's foreign policy along with other policies.

"The Maldives is for every Maldivian individual." “It is not part of Dr. Muizzu’s administration, which has a popularity rating below 30 percent,” he stated, alluding to the findings of a recent referendum.

"The government must responsibly use grants and loans offered by bilateral partners."

The Foreign Ministry implied that Nasheed's comments were "reckless," even though it did not explicitly mention him. The ministry emphasized the necessity of exercising "utmost care and judgment" when discussing issues that impact the nation's national interests and foreign relations.
