The previous First Lady Fazna Ahmed, wife of ex-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, reacted today to comments by former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) vice president Mohamed Shifaz, asserting that it should not be viewed as a success for an organization to be seen as unable to operate without a specific leader.

During a program broadcast on ‘SSTV’ last Sunday evening, Shifaz asserted that the MDP leadership was “dead” two years into the current government, stating that the party could only regain traction if the leadership was returned to former president Mohamed Nasheed.

In an indirect reply to comments made on social media on Tuesday, Fazna asserted that the primary duty of a leader, whether in a political party, educational setting, or family, is to enable others instead of fostering dependency.

She conveyed the opinion that the notion of an institution relying on a specific person for its functioning is not something to be applauded.

By way of example, Fazna remarked that if her children felt they were unable to handle life without her, she would see it as a failure on her behalf to have fostered confidence and leadership skills in them.

She mentioned a major weakness often linked to charismatic leaders is that organizations may become overly reliant on a single individual.

“While charisma can generate momentum, sustainability is what creates lasting institutions,” she emphasized.

Fazna’s comments arise during significant splits within MDP ahead of the party’s forthcoming chairperson election. A fierce rivalry has developed between Nasheed and South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, as both are vying for the role. Although individuals associated with Solih are generally seen as backing Meekail’s campaign, Nasheed and his allies have been vigorously campaigning for the position.

The election for the MDP chairperson is set to take place next. According to the party's constitution, the role of chairperson is viewed as one of the most powerful positions within the party.
