A diver from the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) has passed away while involved in a search and rescue mission for Italian divers who are missing in Vaavu Atoll.
Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhy was brought to ADK Hospital in critical condition after emerging during the operation but ultimately passed on while undergoing treatment.
The event took place close to V. Alimathaa, where five individuals; four Italian tourists and the diving instructor for the safari disappeared while diving on Thursday afternoon.
The body of one diver was found after sunset on Thursday, while the other four are still missing.
Officials reported that the retrieved body was discovered within a cave at a depth of approximately 60 metres (197 feet). Authorities think the remaining missing divers might likewise be within the same cave, which is thought to stretch approximately 200 feet.
In the Maldives, the legal maximum diving depth is 30 metres, and an investigation has been initiated by authorities to determine why the group went beyond the allowed limit.
The Ministry of Tourism stated that ensuring safety in the tourism sector is the duty of all operators and called for strict adherence to regulations, noting that appropriate measures will be implemented to enhance safety standards.
