On Friday, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih publicly endorsed Meekail Ahmed Naseem for the role of chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Meekail is competing for the position alongside former President Mohamed Nasheed in the party’s internal elections.
Solih expressed his support for Meekail during a press conference attended by Nasheed and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
In response to a question from Dhauru, Solih explained that Meekail had announced his candidacy three months before Nasheed entered the race and that he had already pledged his support to him at that time.
“Nasheed is now contesting, but my support remains as it was initially,” Solih stated, gesturing towards Nasheed during the conference.
The MDP Parliamentary Group also announced its backing for Meekail’s candidacy.
This endorsement was revealed during a separate press conference held at the party headquarters, Haruge, by Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil and other MDP Members of Parliament.
