A committee meeting is set for today to determine the time designated for discussion and replies regarding the motion to remove Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from his role as Deputy Speaker.
The General Purpose Committee plans to meet at 4pm today to discuss the motion. During the meeting, MPs will determine how many MPs will have the opportunity to speak in the debate on the motion, the time assigned to them, and how many times and for how long Nazim will be permitted to reply.
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group opted for Nazim's dismissal and collected 73 signatures from party MPs for the ensuing motion.
The no-confidence motion against Nazim claims he exploited his role for personal benefit, incited discord, displayed partiality—particularly towards a particular political ideology in his parliamentary duties—and promoted actions that degraded parliamentary decorum while evading accountability.
The motion further claims that Nazim has shown evident partiality in his parliamentary role, demonstrating negligence in safeguarding the rights and privileges of MPs. His conduct has likewise shown to be an impediment for MPs in carrying out their legal responsibilities, the motion states.
According to parliamentary rules, a speaker may be ousted via a motion accompanied by signatures from at least one-fourth of the total MPs, which amounts to a minimum of 24 MPs.
According to the regulations, a Deputy Speaker can be dismissed by a majority vote of the attending MPs.
The present parliament consists of 93 members, with 76 belonging to the ruling PNC.
