Resorts host majority of tourists arriving in 2026

The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has indicated that resorts still lead the nation's tourism industry, representing over 70 percent of guest lodging up to this point in the year.


Official data indicates that the Maldives received 879,154 visitors in 2026 up to the current date, marking a modest decrease of 5.3 percent in comparison to the same period last year.


Resorts continued to be the top choice for accommodation among travelers, accommodating 604,888 guests.


Guesthouses hosted 211,275 visitors, whereas hotels received 22,512 patrons.


An additional 19,222 guests opted to remain on safari boats throughout their journeys.


The tourism sector presently comprises 179 active resorts and 952 lodges throughout the nation.


Among global markets, China continued to be the top source of tourists to the Maldives with 134,838 arrivals noted this year.


Russia came in second with 116,010 arrivals, while the United Kingdom had 75,886 visitors. Italy and Germany continued to be among the leading markets.


Air travel remained the main method of entry for international visitors, with over 865,000 arrivals logged at airports across the country.


Velana International Airport managed the vast majority of arriving tourists, facilitating more than 854,000 entries.



Fewer numbers of tourists came via Gan International Airport, Maafaru International Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Villa International Airport Maamigili, and Dhaalu Airport.
