Thailand has made significant changes to its visa policy, greatly shortening the duration for which Maldivian citizens can stay in the country visa-free.

With the recent regulations approved by the Thai government this month, nationals from many countries will qualify for a 30-day visa exemption. Nevertheless, the Maldives has been categorized in the shortest-duration section under Thailand’s “One Country, One Privilege” policy, restricting Maldivian citizens to a 15-day visa-free entry upon arrival.

The alteration in policy is anticipated to pose considerable difficulties for Maldivians visiting Thailand for tourism and medical care. The updated regulations are part of a larger effort by Thailand’s Foreign Ministry to enhance the nation’s immigration framework.

Since July 2024, Thailand had allowed citizens from 93 countries, including the Maldives, to stay visa-free for 60 days. The initiative was launched during the administration of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to enhance tourism and has been particularly advantageous for long-term travelers and remote workers.

Thailand's Foreign Ministry indicated that the revision of the policy was driven by an increase in incidents related to visa overstays and illicit business operations. Officials observed that internet fraud rings had taken advantage of the 60-day visa waiver scheme. Other reasons mentioned for the alterations included minimizing national security threats and refocusing efforts on drawing what officials referred to as "quality tourists."

The new regulations have led to the complete abolition of the 60-day visa-free scheme. Entry point immigration procedures are anticipated to become stricter, with officers directed to thoroughly review hotel bookings, return flights, and evidence of adequate financial resources for the length of a visitor's stay.

The revised policy is anticipated to have a notably profound effect on Maldivians, many of whom regularly visit Thailand for medical care, commerce, and brief vacations. A 15-day visit is frequently inadequate for those experiencing significant medical surgeries or needing prolonged recovery care, complicating travel plans.

Important considerations for travelers to the Maldives include:

- The need to secure a visa beforehand for visits longer than 15 days.

- Higher travel costs resulting from visa application charges.

- A fee for the visa application is 1,000 Thai Baht, roughly equal to USD 30.

- Decreased adaptability for urgent travel and extended planning times prior to departure.

For numerous Maldivians visiting Thailand for long business procurement trips or family vacations, the updated regulations are likely to create considerable inconvenience.

Officials have verified that visitors presently in Thailand will be allowed to stay until their initially approved duration ends. Once the new system is fully implemented, Maldivians intending to stay in Thailand for more than 15 days must secure an e-visa via Thailand's official platform. The application procedure will necessitate comprehensive details about the travel purpose, lodging arrangements, and verified return travel itineraries.

The Thai government is anticipated to enact the adjustments after their release in the Royal Gazette, with the regulations generally coming into force within 15 days of publication. Travelers are encouraged to closely keep track of how long they stay and to secure the required visas ahead of their journey.
